For the first time, renewable energy has become the largest source of electricity in the European Union in 2020. Germany and Spain hit major milestones last year, including the UK, leaving the EU in January 2020.
During the previous year, Renewable energy helped power 38% of electricity in the EU, as cited by a report from energy think tanks Ember and Agora Energiewende.
This gives renewable energy the slight edge over fossil fuels which generated for 37% of Europe’s electricity, the remainder of which comes from nuclear energy.
The rise in popularity and usage of renewables is great news for the world since it cuts back on pollution. However, renewable energy sources will need to accelerate to ward off potential climate change-induced disasters.
“Renewables overtaking fossils is an important milestone in Europe’s clean energy transition. However, let’s not be complacent,” Patrick Graichen, director of Agora Energiewende, said in a statement. “Post-pandemic recovery [programs] needs to go hand-in-hand with accelerated climate action.”
Recently, the EU has been aiming to half the CO2 emissions by 2030 and virtually eliminates it by 2050. United Nations scientists believe this will be important to keep climate change at a relatively low level. It will be imperative for Europe to double the speed it deploys renewables in 2020 to fulfill that EU commitment.
