Facebook said on Friday that it was starting to create “topic exclusion restrictions” on its platform, giving advertisers more ability to remove certain types of content from appearing with their ads.
Companies including Coca-Cola and Starbucks boycotted Facebook in July following the death in police custody of an American black man named George Floyd.
Advertisers have complained for years that large social media companies do very little to prevent ads from appearing with hate speech, fake news and other malicious content. In September, Facebook and YouTube, and Twitter signed an agreement with major advertisers to control malicious content online.
Facebook said in a blog post on Friday that the restrictions will help advertisers define how their ads are displayed on the Facebook News Feed, and that it will begin testing the restrictions with a small group of advertisers, a year before the process is completed
