While much of the world looked on in horror as the Taliban steadily advanced towards the Presidential Palace in Afghanistan, Miles Routledge was on the lookout for a summer vacation.
As bizarre as it may sounds, this young man made a firm choice from the comfort of his home in the UK to pick from a list of dangerous countries, Afghanistan as his alternative to a beach holiday.
This baffling choice of holiday destination has been met with much criticism over social media given that he knowingly visited a foreign nation that was undergoing vast amounts of turmoil and destabilization.
During his time in this nation, this student is claiming that he encountered Taliban members, had to find safety in NATO controlled safe houses in the midst of gunfire and even witness various dead bodies on the streets.
Over the days of this stay, he made sure to share his journey on social media with him even admitting that he may have, “bitten off more than I can chew”.
This Loughborough University student shared footage on Facebook that showed him wearing a flak jacket aboard a military style plane that took him to safety in Dubai.
He wrote: “The happy ending: landed in Dubai thanks to the brilliant people at the British Army. All safe!”
It was right in the middle of the chaos that unfolded last Monday as the world watched people trying to escape the country on board a US Air Force plane that led people to fall to their deaths.
Miles Routledge also spoke about the sounds of gunfire that he heard from near his compound and that despite all that was unfolding around him that he felt safe.
It was only on the Tuesday of that week that it was discovered that this UK student had a place on the evacuation list from Kabul.
