This is the news that shook the nation.
The man,
who is 48 years old has now been sentenced to life in prison for the despicable murder of a 33-year-old marketing executive. According to Lord Justice Fulford, the case was so grievous that it deserved to receive the sentence of a full life order at the Old Bailey on Thursday.
“The misuse of a police officer’s role such as occurred in this case in order to kidnap, rape and murder a lone victim is of equal seriousness as a murder for the purpose of advancing a political, religious ideological cause,” he said.
He described the murder as “devastating” and “tragic” and said Couzens went out “hunting a lone female to kidnap and rape”. He also said Ms Everard was “a wholly blameless victim of a grotesque series of circumstances that culminated in her death”.
The family of the victim has released a statement at this time saying that they are pleased to heard that the murderer has received a full life sentence.
The tale of the murder is chilling. Couzens had used his Metropolitan Police issue warrant card as well as handcuff to grab Ms Everard as she made her way home from a friend’s house in South London on the 3rd of March.
The officer had then driven to a secluded rural area near Dover in Kent where he had raped Ms Everard. The victim had then been murdered by means of strangulation using a police issue belt around 2:30am the next morning.
This man had then burnt her body in a refrigerator in an area of land he owned before dumping the remains in a nearby pond.
During an emergency interview at his home Couzens, built a story that alleged that he was being pressured by a gang to kidnap a girl.
