The rules have changed for the people traveling to the UK. The government took a decision on 11th January that now allows people who are fully vaccinated to come to England without taking a pre-departure Covid test. Another change was that they can take a lateral flow test and not a PCR test after two days upon the arrival. Lateral flow test kits can be ordered online or picked up from pharmacies and are much cheaper and the results are given out much quicker as well. Fully vaccinated travelers also do not need to self-isolate.
According to the current rules, people who are fully vaccinated and those under the age of 18 do not need to take a test two days before arrival to England. Upon arrival, they do have to take a PCR test, but self-isolation, until the results arrive, is no longer necessary. On the second day, they will have to take a rapid lateral flow test from a private provider as the NHS does not allow free testing. The unvaccinated population will have to take the pre-departure test, PCR test as well as self-isolate for 10 days.
The reason that Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave for the removal of pre-departure tests was that it “discourages many from traveling for fear of being trapped overseas and incurring significant extra expense”. Another reason is that it would be a much-needed boost for global businesses as well as allow people to see their loved ones overseas.
