Neighbours is an Australian soap opera by Reg Watson, which showcased the livelihoods of the people in Erinsborough, a fictional suburb in Melbourne, Victoria. It was also successful in the UK and was first televised on BBC One in 1986 and then moved to Channel 5 in 2008. Channel 5 was solely responsible for funding the show.
In February 2022, Channel 5 decided to pull the plug on Neighbours, which was on its 37th season. A Channel 5 spokesperson, after thanking the cast, production team, and fans, also added, “We recognize that there will be disappointed about this decision, however, our current focus is on increasing our investment in original U.K. drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers”.
Neighbours started the acting careers of several famous names of today, such as Margot Robbie, Liam Hemsworth, Kylie Minogue, Natalie Imbruglia, and Ben Mendelsohn. A lot of people are in disappointment and shock that the show was dropped by Channel 5. Neighbours production team has been told that the show would continue till June, but beyond that depends on whether or not another channel would fund the process.
Neighbours have been a source of joy and escapism to many UK residents. Everyone agrees that the show is iconic due to its many storylines focusing on day-to-day problems and even more serious issues such as eating disorders, teen pregnancies, career, and financial problems. The show was quite progressive. Neighbours have also received many awards such as the Logie Award and Writers’ Guild awards. It remains to be seen as to what will happen to Neighbours, but hopefully, another backer will come forward for the show to go on.
