Rival hackers and researchers have identified the teenager, who is said to have amassed a £10.6 million fortune through hacking. The City of London Police say they have arrested seven teenagers in connection with the gang but won’t say if he is one of them. The boy’s father told the BBC that his family was worried and that they were trying to keep him away from computers. Under the online aliases “White” or “Breachbase,” the autistic teenager is said to be behind the prolific Lapsu$ hacker crew, which is thought to be based in South America.
Lapsu$ is a relatively new hacker cyber-crime gang that has become one of the most talked about and feared hacker cyber-crime gangs after successfully breaching major corporations such as Microsoft and then bragging about it on online platforms. The Lapsu$ cyber-extortion group has quickly gained notoriety due to its targeting of high-profile individuals and having an active presence on Telegram, which is a messaging app. Its channel now has 47,000 subscribers. According to Microsoft, on the 23rd, Lapsu$ gained limited access to its system. Okta, a security company, admitted that it, too, had been hacked by the group, with ramifications for hundreds of its clients. The group’s most recent message was posted on the channel on Wednesday, and it said: “A few of our members has a vacation until 30/3/2022. We might be quiet for some times. Thanks for understand us – we will try to leak stuff ASAP.”
The adolescent, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, attends an Oxford special education school. “Seven people between the ages of 16 and 21 have been arrested in connection with an investigation into a hacking group. They have all been released under investigation. Our inquiries remain ongoing.” the City of London Police said.
After an apparent falling out with business partners, “White” was outed-or “doxxed”-on a hacker website. His name, address, and social media pictures were all revealed by the hackers. They also published a biography of his hacking career, which stated: “After a few years, his net worth had risen to well over 300 BTC [roughly $14m]… [He is] now associated with the “Lapsu$” want-tobe ransomware group, which has been extorting and “hacking” several organizations.” Bloomberg was the first to report that the cyber-security researchers had been tracking “White” for nearly a year and had linked him to Lapsu$ and other hacking incidents. “We’ve had his name since the middle of last year and identified him prior to the doxxing,” said Allison Nixon, who is a chief research officer at cyber-security investigation firm Unit 221B.
