Downing Street has confirmed that Prime Minister Boris Johnson met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. The visit was described as a show of solidarity with the people of Ukraine by No. 10. According to a spokesman, Mr Johnson’s trip is being used to lay out a new package of financial and military aid. It comes just one day after the UK announced £100 million in weapons for Ukraine in response to a train station bombing. “The prime minister has travelled to Ukraine to meet President Zelensky in person, as a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people,” said the spokesman. Among the things discussed were the UK’s unfaltering support for Ukraine and financial as well as military assistance. The visit was not known to anybody until the Ukrainian embassy posted some photos of the prime minister meeting up with the Ukrainian president on Twitter. Andriy Sybiha, who is the deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential office, stated in a Facebook post that, “The UK is the leader in defence support for Ukraine. The leader in the anti-war coalition. The leader in sanctions against the Russian aggressor.”
Mr Johnson praised President Zelensky’s steadfast leadership and the invincible heroism and courage of the Ukrainian people in a statement issued following the meeting, saying: “Ukraine has defied the odds and pushed Russian forces back from the gates of Kyiv.” Mr Johnson later said in a video address alongside President Zelensky that Ukrainians “have shown the courage of a lion, but you, Volodymyr, have given the roar of that lion.”
Mr Johnson is the first G7 member to visit Ukraine’s capital for talks during the conflict. Mr Zelensky has urged the international community to hold Russian forces accountable for the missile strike on Kramatorsk station, which was teeming with women and children fleeing the area. The Kremlin has denied any involvement in the attack.
The day after the UK announced a £100 million arms deal with the country was when the prime minister visited Ukraine. Mr Johnson stated at a Downing Street press conference on Friday that the UK will send more military equipment, including Starstreak anti-aircraft missiles and 800 anti-tank missiles. It came in response to a request from Ukraine for more weapons as it prepares for an expected Russian offensive in the country’s east, after Moscow withdrew its forces from the area around Kyiv.
