An investigation into a “extraordinary breach of security” is underway after an intruder dressed as a priest allegedly spent the night eating and drinking with soldiers at a barracks near Windsor Castle.
On Wednesday, while the Queen was at Sandringham for Easter, police were called to reports of an intruder at Victoria Barracks on Sheet Street in Windsor. The Coldstream Guards, known for their distinctive red jackets and black bearskin hats, are stationed at the barracks. They serve as ceremonial protectors of Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace. The battalion’s primary role as part of the Household Division is public duties, including marches through town and to and from the castle. It also participates in official state ceremonies.
The soldiers were reportedly approached at the gate by a man who introduced himself as Father Cruise. Despite the fact that he had no identification or credentials, he allegedly spent the night eating and drinking with senior officers. The man was also offered a place to sleep for the night.
A source told TalkTV that the incident was a “extraordinary breach of security” and that the man “appeared at the gate in the evening… and claimed to be a friend of the battalion’s Padre Rev Matt Coles.” In the officer’s mess, he was invited in and offered food. According to the source, once inside, the man drank with the officers in the bar, engaged in “banter with the lads,” and told them tall stories about his time in Iraq. The incident, according to a spokesperson, will be “thoroughly investigated as a matter of priority,” and the army “takes this breach of security extremely seriously.” The army stated that it would be “inappropriate to comment further at this time” because the incident is still being investigated. An intruder was reported at Victoria Barracks in Sheet Street, Windsor, at 9.20 a.m. on Wednesday, according to a Thames Valley police spokesperson. “Officers attended and removed the intruder from the barracks,” they confirmed. There was no need for any further action.”
The security breach could have serious ramifications for senior Coldstream Guards officers. It also comes amid reports that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge intend to relocate their family to Windsor.
