Throughout the past few months, Sri Lanka has heard nothing but the words crisis, recession, and
hyperinflation, and wherever you are in the world right now, you may have come across these
disturbing courses of events, for which Sri Lankans do not even bat an eye when they put the
entire blame on the Rajapaksha Clan.

But what exactly is happening amidst all this chaos of intergovernmental decisions and PM Ranil
Wickramasighe’s new measures to ensure economic stability, according to the local media?
Anyone taking a stroll around their neighborhood would now come across dozens of men in
uniform, smiling happily at their phone screens as if they had hit the jackpot! So what exactly is
happening around Colombo these days?
Armed men are seen around Colombo during both the break of dawn and at night carrying
loaded guns to work. Residents in the areas say that these men are assigned the task of protecting
the so-called powerful personas of the men who hold positions in the current parliament.

Regardless of the army’s duties, people argue whether Sri Lanka can actually afford to pay these
idling soldiers, who are probably watching tik tok videos just to pass their time!
While they are not to blame since they are doing their job, the bigger questions are, will
President Gotabaya Rajapsksha continue to provide unnecessary protection to his henchmen or
put the needs of his countrymen first? Can’t the strength of these armed soldiers be put to better
use, like cultivating food as a countermeasure for the Sri Lankan the food crisis we are yet to
face.
