President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka David McKinnon held a discussion today on the economic and political crisis in Sri Lanka, including the hardships faced by the public.

In a Twitter message, McKinnon said Canada is committed to supporting Sri Lanka in line with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) policies, to enable an early return to macroeconomic stability and growth.

Canada strongly supports the political and economic reform necessary for a peaceful, reconciled, and prosperous Sri Lanka.

Particularly at this sensitive time, the democratic right to peaceful protest must be respected throughout the country, he further said.

The Canadian High Commissioner added that Canada will continue to support Sri Lankans during this crisis, including ongoing assistance to procure medicine and strengthen food security via the United Nations, other agencies, and the Canada Fund.
