Former England cricket captain, Eoin Morgan, has announced his retirement from professional cricket on Monday. He previously stepped down from England’s white-ball team in June of last year and handed the captaincy to Jos Buttler, who went on to lead England to win the T20 World Cup in Australia. Since retiring from international cricket, Morgan has played in franchise cricket for the London Spirit in The Hundred and the Paarl Royals in the SA20.
Morgan took to social media to confirm his full-time retirement from the sport, but stated that he plans to stay involved in cricket as a commentator and pundit. In his statement, he expressed his gratitude for the experiences and memories cricket has given him, including traveling the world, forming lifelong friendships, and spending time with loved ones. He also thanked his family, friends, teammates, coaches, fans, and those behind the scenes who supported him throughout his career.
Morgan is credited with revolutionizing England’s white-ball team, leading them to World Cup victory in 2019 with his fearless and aggressive approach to batting. During his time as captain, England topped the one-day and Twenty20 rankings, setting a precedent for other nations to adopt a more attacking style in major tournaments.
