Rescuers in Turkey are continuing to search for people trapped under rubble after two new earthquakes struck the country, killing at least three people. The tremors, measuring 6.4 and 5.8 in magnitude, hit in the southeast near the border with Syria, where devastating quakes occurred on 6 February. The earlier quakes had resulted in 44,000 deaths in Turkey and Syria, with tens of thousands of people left homeless. Buildings that had been weakened by the earlier quakes collapsed in both countries on Monday. Turkey’s disaster and emergency agency reported that the 6.4 tremor occurred at 20:04 local time (17:04 GMT), followed by the 5.8 quake three minutes later. The Interior Minister urged people not to enter potentially dangerous buildings, with reports suggesting that hundreds have been injured.
