Magnitude 6.8 Earthquake Strikes Eastern Tajikistan, Followed by 5.0 Aftershock

On Thursday morning, Tajikistan’s semi-autonomous eastern region, Gorno-Badakhshan, experienced a magnitude 6.8 earthquake with an epicenter located around 82 km from the border with China. Chinese state television CCTV reported a 7.3-magnitude earthquake near the border of China’s Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region and Tajikistan at around the same time. An aftershock of 5.0-magnitude hit the area 20 minutes after the initial quake. The sparsely populated region is surrounded by the towering Pamir Mountains, and the US Geological Survey estimated that “little or no population” will be exposed to landslides from the quake. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre revised the size of the temblor from 7.1-magnitude to 6.3.
