Turkey has been struck by another earthquake, just three weeks after a magnitude 7.8 quake killed over 48,000 people and left close to 10,000 aftershocks in its wake. The latest earthquake was centered in the town of Yesilyurt in Malatya province and had a magnitude of 5.6. A father and daughter were reportedly trapped under the rubble of a building that collapsed during the earthquake. The province of Malatya was one of the areas most affected by the previous quake, and last week, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey’s Hatay province, which was also badly hit.
In the wake of the catastrophic February 6 earthquake, Turkish authorities have arrested 184 people suspected of responsibility for the collapse of buildings, including construction contractors, property owners, and others with legal responsibility for buildings. Investigations are ongoing, and many Turks have expressed anger over what they see as corrupt building practices and flawed urban development. Meanwhile, nearly two million people left homeless by the disaster are being housed in tents, container homes, and other facilities in the region and other parts of the country.
