England and Wales increase legal age for marriage to 18
England and Wales have raised the legal age of marriage to 18 with a new law that also covers non-legally binding ceremonies. The previous law allowed marriage at the age of 16 or 17 with parental consent and did not prohibit non-registered ceremonies for younger children.
