Police and Westminster City Council have seized over £140,000 worth of fake and illegal products from 29 candy and souvenir shops on London’s Oxford Street. The investigation was launched after officials became suspicious of the high number of these shops, which rarely saw customers. During the raids, illegal vapes and fake Apple and Gucci products were among the items confiscated. Customers also reported being overcharged for products, and the council is pursuing £9m in unpaid business rates. Officials believe that most of the illegal products were smuggled through UK customs and distributed via hubs in Manchester and London. The total value of fake and illegal goods seized in Oxford Street’s US-themed candy stores in the last 15 months amounts to over £1 million.
