US, UK and Australia to build nuclear-powered submarines under Aukus agreement to counter China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Australia will receive at least three nuclear-powered submarines from the US before working together with the UK to create a new fleet, including reactors made by Rolls-Royce. The submarines will not have nuclear weapons and will not affect Australia’s commitment to being a nuclear-free country. The plan includes embedding members of the Royal Australian Navy at US and UK submarine bases to gain the necessary skills, and designing and building a new nuclear-powered submarine for the UK and Australian navies called SSN-AUKUS.
