Over 175,000 Patient Appointments and Procedures Cancelled During Junior Doctors’ Most Disruptive NHS Strike This Winter, BMA Urges Formal Pay Talks

Tens of thousands of junior doctors participated in a 72-hour strike, causing the cancellation of over 175,000 patient appointments and procedures in England. Emergency care was provided by consultants, but many planned, non-urgent treatments had to be rescheduled, including hip and knee operations, routine checks for patients with diabetes, and cancer screenings. NHS England’s medical director, Prof Sir Stephen Powis, called the strike “on an unprecedented scale,” impacting efforts to tackle the COVID backlog. The British Medical Association (BMA) is urging doctors’ leaders and ministers to start formal pay talks, after the BMA called for a 35% pay rise, reversing 15 years of cuts, and two-thirds of junior doctors are members of the BMA.
