Canadian singer Grimes and Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s firstborn son has a unique and somewhat complicated name. Born in May 2020, the baby was originally named X Æ A-12, which is pronounced ‘Ex Ash A Twelve’. However, Californian laws prohibited the use of certain characters in a baby’s name, so the couple changed it to X Æ A-Xii, with the Arabic numeral 12 replaced by the Roman numeral XII. Grimes explained that they chose X for the unknown variable, A-12 for their favorite aircraft, and Æ as the Elven spelling of Ai, which means love and/or Artificial Intelligence. While technically legal, the original name was not accepted by the state, which only allows the 26 characters of the English language for baby names. The couple had the opportunity to appeal, but it was unlikely to be granted due to California’s restrictions on using symbols.
