The UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, has revealed that he paid over £1 million in UK tax over the past three years, based on earnings of more than £4.7 million from income and a US-based investment fund. Sunak had promised to publish his tax returns during his campaign to become Conservative Party leader in 2020, amid calls for transparency over his finances, particularly after it emerged that his wife had non-domicile status. Sunak is believed to be one of the wealthiest MPs in Parliament and owns several properties, including a Grade II-listed manor house in his North Yorkshire constituency. His tax returns were released as former Prime Minister Boris Johnson was questioned by MPs over allegations of Covid lockdown breaches. Sunak’s earnings for 2021-2022 were over £1.9 million, according to the records. The UK Labour Party welcomed the publication of the returns, while the Liberal Democrats criticised Sunak for releasing them while Johnson was under scrutiny.
