The Bank of England is producing new banknotes featuring the image of King Charles, which will replace damaged or worn older notes. The new notes, with the King’s portrait as the only design change, will include denominations of £5, £10, £20, and £50. However, self-service tills and other machines need to recognize the new image, requiring a long build-up process.

According to the Bank of England’s chief cashier, Sarah John, the notes will not be issued until mid-2024 to ensure that the machines used across the country can accept them. John said that all machines need to be adapted with software updates to recognize the new design, which takes months to complete.

The reverse side of the current polymer Bank of England banknotes, which feature Sir Winston Churchill, Jane Austen, JMW Turner, and Alan Turing, will remain unchanged. The BBC was given exclusive access to the highly-secure site where the banknotes are being produced.
